Each morning of December, a new configuration of pale birch pieces waits to be arranged inside this rich reddish-brown tannenbaum — the goal always the same, the solution always different, the number at the centre ticking quietly toward Christmas. It is an advent calendar reimagined as something worthy of the season: no paper windows, no chocolate, no disposable anything. Just the particular satisfaction of a puzzle solved, a day marked, and a golden star presiding over all of it from the top.
Designed by Jean-Claude Constantin, whose wooden puzzles we have come to regard as some of the most beautifully considered objects in the shoppe, the Tannenbaum is the kind of advent tradition that gets better with each passing year — because the puzzles don't get easier, and December never seems to slow down.
Pull it out on the first of December. Put it away on the twenty-fourth. Bring it back next year.
