Tony the Grande Gator has a reputation, and he has decided to be entirely unbothered by it. Yes, the teeth are there — stitched along that magnificent, architecturally improbable jaw, each one a small gleam of honesty in an otherwise deeply green face. Tony has never pretended to be something he isn't. He is a gator, and he wears it with the kind of unself-conscious confidence that most creatures spend their whole lives attempting to cultivate.
What they don't tell you about Tony — what you only discover once he has taken up residence in a room and arranged himself against the nearest cushion — is that he is extraordinarily good company. Patient in the way that only genuinely ancient creatures can be, curious about everything that comes within range of those quietly attentive eyes, and possessed of a long, luxurious body that is, it turns out, exactly the right size and shape for being held.
His deep forest green fabric has the quality of a riverbank in high summer: lush, unhurried, and entirely in its right place. The corded texture of his limbs, the satisfying heft of him, the webbed feet planted with such casual assurance — all of it speaks of a creature who has been here before and expects to be here for a very long time. Tony is for the child who is drawn instinctively to the unconventional. And for the adult who secretly is too. Spectacularly, unapologetically himself.
Véronique Lacaze is an interior designer and graduate of the Arts Décoratifs de Paris. She began her career at Printemps where she became the project manager for the animated Christmas windows. She then began to design the Printemps mascots, the famous characters of the Boulevard Haussmann that, at the end of each year, make children and adults dream alike. It was a magical experience for her. Creating characters for children, seeing them come to life in the shop windows... Véronique Lacaze feels like a real Geppetto!
