Some mysteries are best solved in a comfortable chair, with a good lamp and nowhere to be. This edition is bound in midnight-black cloth and stamped in gold with the tools of the trade: a deerstalker, a pipe, a violin, a magnifying glass, a key tagged 221B, and one suspiciously small bottle marked with a skull and crossbones, all set in an olive-green oval. Inside, the page edges are tinted green to match, and a green ribbon marks your place when the case has to wait until morning.
The stories first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891, with Holmes at his most gaunt and brilliant and the loyal, wonderfully pedantic Dr. Watson at his side. Sidney Paget's original illustrations run through the pages, the same drawings that gave readers their picture of Holmes and his Victorian London, and the deerstalker he's still never seen without. More than a century on, readers keep coming back for the same reasons: the sharp mind, the ruthless logic, and the villains who never saw it coming.
It's a handsome book, with the weight and feel of something meant to be kept, and one that looks as good on a shelf as it reads in the hand. A wonderful gift for the mystery lover, a graduate, a rainy-day reader, or anyone who has been meaning to read the originals properly.
The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes | Clothbound Edition measures 9.75" L x 7.75" W x 2" H and has 1012 pages.
