Momo the Grande Hippo | Olive

Momo is not in any particular hurry, and this has always served her extremely well. There is a kind of wisdom that belongs exclusively to hippos — a deep, settled understanding that the world is best experienced from a position of unhurried solidity. Momo has this in abundance. She sits with the quiet authority of someone who has found her place and sees absolutely no reason to vacate it, her broad, beautifully constructed form radiating the particular contentment of a creature entirely at peace with her own considerable presence.

She arrives in that deep, riverbank olive — the colour of still water and late afternoon shade and the kind of place where nothing very urgent has ever happened. The craftsmanship is visible in every seam: the considered weight of her, the softness that invites the kind of grip that children apply to things they have decided belong to them permanently.

Momo's tiny ears sit atop that magnificent square head with an expression that manages to be simultaneously alert and completely unruffled — the look of someone who notices everything and has decided that most of it is fine. She will anchor a room. She will be leaned against, dragged along on journeys, and returned to at the end of long days. She is the kind of companion who never makes demands, never needs reassurance, and is simply, reliably, magnificently there.

Véronique Lacaze is an interior designer and graduate of the Arts Décoratifs de Paris. She began her career at Printemps where she became the project manager for the animated Christmas windows. She then began to design the Printemps mascots, the famous characters of the Boulevard Haussmann that, at the end of each year, make children and adults dream alike. It was a magical experience for her. Creating characters for children, seeing them come to life in the shop windows... Véronique Lacaze feels like a real Geppetto!
