Ida the Woodland Owl

Ida knows things. Not in a way she feels the need to announce — simply in the way of someone who has been paying very close attention for a very long time. She sits with the settled authority of a creature entirely at home in her own considerable presence: that magnificent round head tilted ever so slightly, those great grey-ringed eyes taking in everything at once with an expression that manages to be simultaneously startled and completely unruffled — the look of someone who is always awake when the rest of the world thinks no one is watching. The little yellow beak carries just the suggestion of something about to be said, and wisely decided against. The cream tufted eyebrow feathers — two small trails of natural cord springing from her forehead — give her the air of someone who has heard it all before and remains, despite everything, genuinely interested.

Her colouring is the woodland itself: soft cream and warm parchment at the chest and face, deep olive-brown wings and taloned feet planted with quiet certainty on whatever surface she has chosen to occupy. Ida will perch on a shelf and observe a room with complete equanimity. She is the companion for the child who asks the most questions, and for the adult who has learned that the wisest ones rarely rush to answer. Patient, watchful, and thoroughly at peace with the dark.

Véronique Lacaze is an interior designer and graduate of the Arts Décoratifs de Paris. She began her career at Printemps where she became the project manager for the animated Christmas windows. She then began to design the Printemps mascots, the famous characters of the Boulevard Haussmann that, at the end of each year, make children and adults dream alike. It was a magical experience for her. Creating characters for children, seeing them come to life in the shop windows... Véronique Lacaze feels like a real Geppetto!
